| South of Ancient Olympia, at the limits of the prefectures of Ilia and Messinia, at the département of the Peloponnese and very close to the extensive area of ancient Figalias, the gorge of Nedas is located. The National road of Patras - Pyrgos Kalamata follows the contour of the coast while the Ionian Sea spreads open its horizon to the west. But the is not only famous for the beauty of the sea. Behind the steep mountains and steep slopes, to the east, lies a beautiful mountain that keeps inside it, a small but beautiful mountain river, Neda. The summer resort of Kyparissia with endless beaches with good hotels and the impressive medieval castle. There are few who follow the narrow road that leads after 18 km in the mountain village of Platanias. This narrow dirt road leads visitors into the gorge of Nedas. The old stone bridge delimits the start of the walk. The path marked by illuminating signs coordinate with the bed of the river and continues to a dark canyon. The difficult path, ascends to the edge of the gorge until you encounter the small waterfall with blue and white water (because of rocks that crosses). At the bottom of the gorge you may see its ‘big brother’ shaking the water from a height of approximately 20 meters. The overall trend for the crossing of the gorge from the beginning to the end, requires 7 to 8 hours. At some points river walking is mandatory, while in some others you even have to swim! |
