One of the most Holy places of the ancient times, dedicated to the father of the gods, Zeus Olympion. Olympia is the place where the Olympic Games were born and took place in antiquity.

OlympiaOlympia, was a city in the ancient Greece at Ilia, known as the place of the Olympic Games in classical times, comparable in importance with the Pythia at Delphi. The golden statue of Zeus, the work of Phidias, which was known in antiquity as one of the seven wonders of the world,was kept there. The origins of the Olympic Games dating back to 776 BC were taking place every four years.

MuseumThe sanctuary of Olympia spreads to the southern foot of the wooden hill of Cronius, between the contribution of Alpheios and Kladeos river. The valley between two rivers in ancient times was full of wild olive, poplar, dryes, and pine trees, this sanctuary called Altis, which means grove.

m-359The Alti falls is surrounded by the enclosure in which the main religious buildings and sacred offerings can be found. Outside the enclosure you can see the auxiliary spaces, ie houses of priests, the baths, the areas of preparation of athletes, and hostels.
